Freelance Surface Pattern Design Service
Are you looking for a freelance surface pattern design service? Since you’ve made your way to this page you’re in the right place and that’s pretty exciting! So let me give you a quick rundown of what a custom pattern can do for you and what to expect when you commission me.
It’s an excellent way to quickly elevate the professionalism of your brand.
As The unboxing experience is becoming more and more important, adding custom elements is a great way to help build brand recognition, and make the experience feel unique.
Before we go any further this process is for custom print and illustration work. If you’re looking to license some of my existing work please email me, I would be happy to show you what is available.
Now it’s no surprise every designer does things a little differently so let me walk you through my three step process.
Step One – Discovery

Everything starts with an email.
You can send an email to justinericksonart@gmail.com.
Please include your project details things like:
- What your intended use of your pattern is, ie. Tissue paper, gift wrap, food-safe wraps, wallpaper.
- Your references, such as mood boards, descriptions of appliqués, Pinterest boards, and themes.
- The number of different designs you need
- If you know them, Sizing specifications or manufacturing restrictions. Like maximum colours, or minimum dpi.
- A General timeline you’re hoping for.
Depending on when you email me, I usually respond the following business day. Secretly I spend about an hour each morning preforming admin. I’ll ask you for any additional details I may need.
Once I have a good understanding of the project scope and because each project is unique we will discuss rates. Typically I charge a flat rate per pattern, but I am flexible. Depending on the project size and the client, I do offer hourly rates.
My goal is to keep things fair, don’t be afraid to ask.
When we’ve reached an agreement I’ll send over an official service agreement, and a deposit request.
Step Two – The Proofing Process

Now that the deposit and paperwork are out of the way, the most fun part of the project begins! From here I’ll start illustrations for your freelance surface pattern design by creating the different motifs of your pattern using the details we discussed.
In a few days you’ll receive your first artwork proof!
Typically I like to show a few different options in the first proof for you to consider. All you need to do is review your drawings and make revisions as needed. We’ll go back and forth a few times until we finalize the design.
Step Three – Delivery

Now that the design has been finalized. I will go through and make any last minute adjustments and prepare the final design for the application you’ve chosen.
You’ll receive the final design in full resolution in the format requested alongside the final invoice. Ready for you to take out into the world!
I hope this gives you a better idea of how my process works. So what are you waiting for let’s do something creative together and elevate your brand to the next level.
I’ve added a form below where you can start the discovery process, or you can email me directly at justinericksonart@gmail.com
I can’t wait to hear about your project!
